Cubic Yard

A cubic yard is a unit of volume equal to 27 cubic feet — a cube three feet on each side. In construction it is the standard unit for measuring and ordering bulk materials like concrete, gravel, sand, and excavated soil.

Concrete in particular is bought and placed by the cubic yard, so estimators convert the dimensions of footings, slabs, and walls into cubic yards to price the pour and schedule delivery.
