MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing)

What is MEP in construction?

MEP stands for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing — the three core building systems that make a structure functional. Mechanical covers heating, ventilation, and air conditioning; electrical covers power, lighting, and low-voltage systems; plumbing covers water supply, drainage, and gas.

Together, MEP systems represent a large share of a building's cost and complexity, and their design and installation have to be coordinated so ducts, pipes, and conduit do not conflict in the same space.

Estimating MEP scope means taking off equipment, linear runs of pipe, duct, and conduit, and the devices and fixtures on the drawings — often across several trade packages. Pulling those quantities cleanly from the plans is exactly the kind of trade takeoff Quotr is built to speed up.

For MEP subcontractors, an accurate takeoff of their system is the basis of the bid. For general contractors, MEP coordination is one of the largest sources of cost and schedule risk on a project.

Why it matters

MEP systems are among the most expensive and complex parts of a building. Estimating and coordinating them well is central to keeping a project on budget.
