What is parametric estimating?

Parametric estimating is a method that calculates a project's cost from a small number of key parameters — such as square footage, number of units, or capacity — multiplied by historical cost rates for each parameter.

It is used early, in conceptual and budgeting phases, before there are detailed drawings to take off. Because it relies on data from past projects, its accuracy depends on how similar the reference projects are to the one being estimated.
