Cost Code

A cost code is a standardized number for categorizing and tracking costs by type of work, often following CSI MasterFormat divisions, so estimates and actuals compare line for line.

Estimators assign cost codes to takeoff items, assemblies, and general conditions so project controls can later match buyout and field costs to the same structure.

Consistent coding makes historical unit costs more reusable on the next similar job.
