Construction Takeoff
What is construction takeoff?
Construction takeoff is the process of measuring and counting the materials, quantities, and scope items needed for a construction project from drawings, blueprints, plans, and specifications.
A takeoff can include linear feet, square footage, cubic yards, fixture counts, device counts, equipment counts, assemblies, and other measurable items. These quantities are then used to build an estimate.
For example, an electrical takeoff may count outlets, switches, panels, conduit, and fixtures. A mechanical takeoff may measure ductwork, equipment, diffusers, and insulation. A drywall takeoff may calculate wall area, framing, board counts, and finishing labor.
Takeoff is one of the first steps in construction estimating. If the takeoff is wrong, the estimate is usually wrong too.
Why it matters
Accurate takeoff helps contractors avoid underbidding, overbidding, missed scope, and margin loss.
