RFI (Request for Information)

What is an RFI (request for information)?

An RFI (request for information) is a formal question from a contractor to the design team to resolve something unclear, missing, or conflicting in the drawings or specs.

RFIs protect the bidder from guessing on ambiguous details and create a written trail for how the scope was clarified.

A high RFI count early usually signals an incomplete plan set — and a higher need for contingency, allowances, or careful bid qualifications.

Why it matters

Unanswered RFIs leave estimators pricing assumptions. Documented answers keep the takeoff aligned with the intended design.
